Best Mattress in India 2020

If you sleep on a bad mattress, you will be met with a wide range of discomforts in the morning – we are talking anything from drowsiness to musculoskeletal pain. Remember that one time you had a neck ache after waking up, because of which you could not turn your neck one inch without feeling a searing pain? Many blame this on a bad sleeping posture, but more often than not the mattress is the culprit for this common issue.

This is not just limited to immediate effects, either. Not picking an optimal mattress and continuing to sleep on an ill-advised low quality mattress will weaken your immunity system, bring your heart conditions and chronic back pain, and cause premature ageing. While these facts may seem jarring and blown out of proportion, we are not exaggerating in the slightest.

Importance of Selecting High-Quality Mattress

Let us know some interesting trivia. As part of a Stanford research project, Randy Gardner currently holds the known world record for staying awake for the longest time without sleep – 264 hours. That is almost 11 days. As the research concludes, the symptoms of sleep deprivation began to show themselves on the third day, including paranoia, short time memory loss, and hallucinations.

Randy’s is a truly rare case. Me and you, the everymen, won’t really go more than two days without sleep if we tried. Even if you are determined to test your limits, you will start experiencing microsleep phases after the 40-hour mark, and your concentration will go down by more than 50%.

All of us sleep for an average of 7 hours daily – some people make do with less, some need more. We spend as much as a third of our lives sleeping. And for such a long span of our lives, mattresses help us sleep.

Many of us will not actively think about mattresses much as long as we are not in bed, unless, of course, we are compelled to think about it as we suffer the aftereffects of choosing a mattress that is not comfortable enough for us.

Mattress Buying Guide:

A Comprehensive and Thorough Mattress Buying Guide: Made Easy

Knowing the importance of buying a good mattress with some consideration is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many factors in play here, and to pick the right mattress for you would be tricky until you know them all.

This is the case because there is no ‘one size fits all’ policy when it comes to mattresses. There cannot be a universally best mattress, because its parameters will depend on your preferred sleeping posture to start with.

To give you an idea, consider this: suppose you like sleeping sideways. Now, generally, the two extremities mattresses come in are hard mattresses and soft mattresses.

The hard mattresses will give you a sturdy support to lie down against – which is self-explanatory enough, but the soft mattresses will instead adapt to the contours of your body. For a side-sleeper, which is you in this case, hard mattresses are a terrible choice, because having no flexibility to retain their original dimension, one side of your skeleton will suppress itself when you sleep. This results in skeleton misalignment, among other difficulties.

Now there are compromises between these two extremities, a semi-firm mattress which will support your body well, but still conform to it and be flexible to an extent. However, as we said, this is but one of many aspects.

But even though there is a lot to cover, do not worry. We will cover all the important bits, and by the time you have finished reading this section, you will have a decent idea to inspect and understand which mattress fits your preferences.

“When exactly should you buy mattresses?”

The answer actually involves several factors and conditions.

  • When your current mattress has begun to sag. There is a common myth that goes around, that you should not replace the mattress until it has sagged completely. This is absolutely false. Mattresses usually mention an on-label durability period, but it begins to sag a year or two prior to that. After one point, you will note that the sagging actually affects the mattress’ performance. This is the point that the mattress has overstayed its welcome at. In general, you should replace your mattress every six or seven years at the least.
  • How to know when it has sagged too far? This actually makes itself known through obvious messages. You will wake up with aches and musculoskeletal difficulties, drowsiness, and often have restless nights.
  • About 70% of mattress owners report great satisfaction at upgrading their mattresses to slightly more expensive, compatible, and comfortable ones. So even if your current coir mattress is not faring so badly, but you still have the budgetary power to afford an upgrade, go for it. Give yourself a treat. Buy yourself a latex or rebonded foam mattress. You will not regret it.
  • You should consider buying a mattress if your weight has significantly changed since you bought your first mattress. Weight gain or loss may make a dramatic difference in the optimal choice of mattresses, and a change in body type means you should get a new mattress to conform to your current weight and body type.
  • Other serious needs for buying a new mattress include pregnancy, as you will have to buy mattresses specifically designed to accommodate and cater to pregnancy.
  • Certain medical diagnoses warrant getting a new mattress too – it is sometimes best to ask your doctor directly. To cite an example, this is most apparent in the case of sleep disorders. A patient of sleep apnea cannot sleep on his or her back, so if the current mattress is designed for back-sleepers, it needs to be changed immediately.

A great place to start would be the structure of a mattress. Generally, mattresses follow a simple and universal structure with two components – a core, which will consist of the actual support layer and upholstery, which acts as a sort of comfort layer wrapped in ‘ticking’, which is basically a tightly woven cotton covering, also seen on sofas and pillows.

Now let us take a look at the different build of mattresses available in India. These differ not only in materials but also in design principles.

Type of Mattress:

  1. Innerspring Mattress
  2. Coir Mattress
  3. Foam Mattress
  4. Memory Foam Mattress
  5. Re-bonded Foam Mattress
  6. Airbed Mattress
  7. Waterbed Mattress
  8. Latex Mattress
  9. Adjustable Base Mattress

#1. Innerspring Mattresses

Best Spring Mattress in India 2019, Urban Ladder DreamLite Eurotop Bonnel Spring Mattress

The idea of innerspring mattresses is simple enough to grasp: over a base polyfoam layer, they make use of steel springs for additional weight absorption.

This means several things: one, it is quite bouncy, and make for a toddler’s paradise with the initial novelty of having something of a bouncing pad at home. Two, yes, this is exactly the gist of what will happen to your initially lucrative spring mattress.

Spring mattresses generally come with a promise of a six to seven year period of confirmed service in which its support remains fine. In practice, though, this can be cut short much easier. Because the support springs are absorbing constant pressure when you are sleeping, it takes away from the durability of the springs constantly.

The average estimations show that the standard spring mattress core layer loses about one fifth (19%) of its durability within the first year of usage itself, and this picks up in the later years at a more rapid rate.

  • You can actually work out the actual durability yourself by inquiring about the coil gauge and coil type. The coil gauge is a parameter on the support springs that are set on a scale from 12, which is thickest, to 18, which is thinnest.
  • There are generally four types of coils in the innerspring mattresses: Bonnell coils, offset coils, continuous wire coils, and on some select few manufacturers, pocketed coils.

A good thing about the spring mattresses is that they often implement a pillow top, so they come with an additional bit of comfort layer. This is usually great for power naps depending on your preference, as in the initial years this extra comfy nature will induce sleep very easily.

To balance its pros and cons:

Pros of Innerspring Mattresses

  • With the lower tier of coils, the beds are cheap to manufacture. Hence their prices are quite low. Though as a caveat these also take a hit in durability; whereas offset coil innersprings are much more expensive because they are more durable.
  • It is bouncy and responsive, which can be either a pro or a con depending on your preferences.

Cons of Innerspring Mattresses

  • As you would expect, the spring mattresses are quite noisy out of the box. Remember, though, that this is only on the cheaper innerspring which use Bonnell coils. The use of pocketed coils can reduce the noise significantly because each spring in these is wrapped in fabric. However, pocketed coils feature heavily only on the hybrid mattresses, and very few innerspring mattresses use them.
  • Like we mentioned earlier, the durability it offers is nothing to write home about. Even the higher tier offset coils and continuous wire coil inner springs (which are more comfortable, we should add) are not the best in durability for their price range.
  • This has almost zero motion isolation, i.e. because of its evenly spread out springs in the support layer it has motion transfer. The impact of movement on one side of the bed travels to the other side. This makes it a bad mattress for couples. Take note, though, that a handful of manufacturers (including those of India) have introduced an additional foam layer to mask the ripple effect.
  • The empty space between the spring coils, as much as it makes the bed cooler, also makes for a breeding ground for dust mites. A counterpoint is that some higher priced spring beds come with in-built mite repellants or prevention mechanisms.
  • No even body weight distribution.

#2. Coir Mattresses

Coir Mattresses

Coir is a natural fibre which is found in the husk of coconuts, between the external covering and the hard internal shell. Because ripe coconuts are in abundance in South Asia, coir mattresses are produced somewhat heavily here. This is because natural resources are in aplenty, and this makes them have significantly less raw material expenses as opposed to alternatives. A natural fibre with more lignin, less cellulose, and dirt cheap prices – what’s there not to like?

Less manufacturing cost, as we all know, equals less market prices too. We will go so far as to say this: Coir mattresses are the most economical option available out of all the kind of mattresses in the world.

The nature of the fiber implemented makes it so that they are basically hard mattresses – think sleeping on a cement slab, but slightly better. Or so would be the case, had the traditional and simplistic composition persisted. In recent days, manufacturers rarely put out standalone coir mattresses. Instead, the standard models use rubberized brown coir acting as the pillar in between foam quilts and additional coating layers, while still retaining the reputation of being a budget-friendly option.

To summarize, here are the pros and cons:

Pros of Coir Mattress

  • Coir Mattresses are extremely budget-friendly. They are not the best in comfort and quality. But nevertheless, a coir mattress can still be a great option if you want a placeholder firm mattress for a couple of years before you eventually upgrade to a better mattress more in line with your preference.
  • Coir mattresses are also an especially good purchase in the warmer regions of India. It complements the tropical climate because unlike foam, for example, it does not absorb a lot of heat.
  • Because these use natural fibers for the most part, they are eco-friendly.
  • The foam-coated hybrid coir mattresses are not noisy at all. This makes them a forerunner even before the market-favourite innerspring beddings.
  • The coir mattresses have an evenly spread out support layer that is comparatively firmer than all the market alternatives. This means that they have excellent motion isolation, which makes them a great option for more than one person sleeping on the same bed. There is no ripple effect, and movement on one side of the bed will not have any repercussion on the other side, unlike spring mattresses.

Cons of Coir Mattress

  • The most obvious negative quality is its extreme firmness, which can be a great discomfort to you if you are a side-sleeper or like to sleep prone, and generally always cause musculoskeletal distress if used over a large period of time. This happens because the firmness does not allow the mattress to adapt to the shape of your body, resulting in inevitable pressure points.
  • Coir mattresses are a strong no-no if you have a history of chronic back pain or spinal difficulties.
  • A large drawback is that the coir layer does not have flexibility. All mattresses are pressed down as they withstand the weight of your body. They sag over time. But a lack of flexibility means that coir mattresses cannot regain their initial shape. This makes them the least durable among mattresses, on average netting you four to five years of service.

#3. Foam Mattresses

Euro Dreams Eurofit Bonded Foam Mattress

This is top of the line premium standard for mattresses in Europe and in the US, and consequently also in India. As you might expect, foam mattresses are not for you if you are looking for a cheap mattress to slap on with hostel beddings in a temporary residence. They have long durability to go with their prices, and they are purchased as a long-term investment for your cozy home.

For a serviceable soft bed experience, these make use of viscoelastic materials, of which the most common and widely available are polyurethane foams of a petro-chemical nature. These terms are nitpicky, and not important to remember. The main idea is that foam mattresses use foam as their compositional bread and butter. The support core is exclusively made of dense polyfoam, while the upholstery also consists of at least one layer of poly foam or memory foam.

Here is an assessment of its pros and cons:

Pros of Foam Mattress

  • Innersprings have an innate tendency to be very noisy, and while the hybrid coif mattresses do address this by using foam layers for noise reduction, it is still not 100% noise-proof. On the other hand, the polyfoam used as a base for both the upholstery and the support layer means that there is absolutely no noise generation in a foam mattress.
  • Add to this the fact that foams are one of the most top-tier flexible materials to build a mattress around. On top of being noiseless, foam mattresses also do not have motion transfer. These two features ensure a sound sleep if you share your bed. There will be little to no movement and zero noise if your spouse/roommate/children move around in their sleep.
  • Foam mattresses are the wisest choice if you live in the colder climates in India, like northern Punjab. We say this because they absorb heat and will keep your body warm even on colder nights than normal.
  • They have great conforming ability. The flexible foam mattress will adapt completely to the curvature of your body, and you can finally stick to your preference of sleeping on your side or sleeping prone without adverse health consequences. The flexibility also makes them a great pain-relief tool. They are the natural sleeping companion for men and women with a medical history of chronic musculoskeletal pain.
  • The decent flexibility also gives them great duration. A foam mattress with a high-density support layer, for example, will last you anything from eight years to more than a decade. So if you want a mattress that will give you a long period of service, go for foam mattresses.

Cons of Foam Mattresses

  • The same fact that it absorbs hit also works as a disadvantage. It will be particularly difficult to use in warm and tropical climates, as the absorbed heat stays trapped within the high-density polyfoam. As a result, you will spend the night in discomfort, sweating, tossing, and turning – which is ironical, because being comfy is the primary forte for foam mattresses.
  • They are on the most expensive end of the spectrum. If you are looking for a budget mattress, foam mattresses are not a valid option for you at all.
  • This will sound counterintuitive to you, but even with all their durability, they are still very susceptible to indentations and sagging.
  • It is not uncommon for foam mattresses to have weaker edge support compared to other, firmer mattresses. Because of these reasons, the experience of using the foam mattress depends on the cot’s structure and edge type. However, some mattress manufacturers do implement workarounds to address this problem.

There are many variations of the foam mattress technology differing in different kinds of foam and different properties. Since we are talking mattresses in India specifically, in this article, we will cover two major subgroups of foam mattresses that are available widely in India – memory foam and rebounded foam. Note that foam figures in many mattresses as a major or minor material, hybrids or otherwise.

#4. Memory Foam Mattress

Best Memory Foam Mattress For Back Pain in India, Coirfit Health SPA Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam mattresses are the most common kind of foam mattresses available on the market globally (foam mattresses and their general thereabouts are listed and covered in the last section).

The reason for the eccentric name is obvious when we spell it out. Memory foam mattresses retain the ‘memory’ of anything that presses down on the surface, i.e. it forms a pronounced and deep impression – like footprints on sands.

This is achievable by using LRPu (low-resistance polyurethane) foam, and the foam bubbles have an ‘open’ structure. This means that the whole surface with the open-cell foam bubbles is a matrix through which air can navigate freely.

Here is an even more intriguing aspect to this. The higher-density LRPu layer is actually responsive to body heat. As hit transfers from the body to it, the foam softens, moulding itself completely to the shape of your body.

To point out its pros and cons:

Pros of Memory Foam Mattress

  • Its stellar flexibility makes it the perfect choice for patients of chronic back pain. There are a couple reasons for this, but the most important of them are the fact that memory foam upholstery adapts completely to anything that presses down on it, completely eliminating any possibility of a pressure point.
  • These are also great for people who are recovering from a spinal injury or ache, as you can sleep on your side or on your stomach with ease on a foam mattress.
  • The low-resistance polyurethane, which is the primary material for its build, also protects the mattress from the dirt. Along with this, they have a far less dust mite nuisance compared to innerspring or coir mattresses. So if you have a runny nose or you are vulnerable to allergens, a memory foam mattress is a great choice.
  • In some climates, memory foam helps retain the perfect body temperature. This makes them even comfier if your room is air-conditioned.

Cons of Memory Foam Mattresses

  • The obvious drawback is also its very point of speciality. It is true that tenderness in mattresses is always something sought after often, but memory foam mattresses are the extreme end of being flexible. It does not counterbalance it with some measure of firmness. If extreme softness is off-putting for you, then it is best to go for a more hybrid alternative rather than a pure foam mattress.
  • Most of India falls under a warm and humid tropical climate. We sweat a lot on the summer days, which lasts for more than four months. The problem with your body sinking completely in the mattress is that there will be no air between your skin and the mattress, so you will perspire even more than usual. It is near impossible to sleep in such a situation. So it is necessary to first make sure your bedroom is air-conditioned before getting a memory foam mattress.
  • Memory foam mattresses are not very compatible with people who move around a lot in their sleep. If you toss and turn frequently in your sleep cycles, you should opt for other mattresses.
  • Memory foam mattresses have a moderate odour potential.
  • These are definitely not the mattress for you if you hold your coffer more dearly than the need for extra comfort and luxury in sleep. Memory foam mattresses are always quite expensive, more so than the costliest brands of high-tier inners springs.

#5. Rebonded Foam Mattresses

Best Mattress in India 2019 for Couple, Springtek Eurotop Ortho Plus 6-inch Re-bonded Memory Foam Mattress

If you have read the above entries about Foam Mattresses / Memory foam mattresses, you already know the basic gist of it. All foam mattresses make use of some form of foam in the composition of both their support layer, their upholstery, and on additional auxiliary layers.

Rebonded foam mattress uses virtually an identical composition. Where it differs from the other kinds of foam mattresses is its deviation in the material. Standard-order foam mattresses and most hybrids from it make use of standalone polyurethane foam.

On the contrary, Rebonded foam mattresses instead follow a comprehensive process of collecting virgin foam and/or reclaimed foam and then make them undergo a re-compression process (think about it like glueing them together under pressure – using a special adhesive). Rebonded foam is sometimes converted from standard polyurethane foam too.

As a result of this rigorous process of re-compression, the produced material is firmer than usual PU foam. At the same time, it also retains the viscoelasticity of PU foam to a reasonable extent.

This firmness makes them the market contender that rivals coir mattress. Except, as you might have already guessed by now, rebonded foam mattress far outperforms coir mattresses in almost every aspect (except for pricing, of course).

According to different compression levels, you can opt for either softer or firmer cores or a compromise between the two with a medium surface.

Without further ado, let us get into the pros and cons:

Pros of Rebonded Foam Mattress

  • Rebonded foam mattresses are the perfect sweet spot between firmness and flexibility. As such, there can be no single mattress to be best for everyone, but the coverage of rebonded foam-based mattresses extend to all three major sleeping positions. Whether you sleep completely upright and supine or like to sleep on your side, or even on your stomach, a rebonded foam mattress will not have adverse effects on things like spine alignment at all.
  • Additionally, if you are a side sleeper, and prone to bouts of shoulder pain, a rebonded foam mattress can almost work a therapeutic effect on you. We say this because the foam is flexible enough to adjust to your shoulder structure, and yet firm enough support the shoulder blades and spine and keep its natural shape in check.
  • Because its core layer is made of compressed waste foams, which are cheap to buy, they are also priced reasonably well for the sheer amount of conveniences they provide. On average, if you calculate factors like durability and comfort quotient, these give you a bang for your bucks without a doubt.
  • On all compression levels, the rebonded foam mattresses come with a bouncy nature. You might recall that inner springs also have this, but rebonded foam mattresses are not remotely as noisy as steel coil supports. So if you like your mattresses bouncy, rebonded foam mattresses even beat inner springs.
  • Moderately high durability lasts at least 8-years and can go more than ten years based on compression level.
  • They are generally very comfy without the disadvantages of the extra tender memory foam mattresses.

Cons of Rebonded Foam Mattress

  • Since they are almost exclusively made of synthetic material, they have very poor breathability. As a result, you will find it quite torrid in summer days, and particularly unfavourable without an air conditioning system in the major tropical climate of India.
  • The glue commonly applied in the making of the support layer is a chemically volatile substance that sometimes emits fumes. This means two things. One, rebonded foam mattresses are not safe for children as a rule of thumb. Secondly, the nature of the glue makes the mattress highly inflammable, so this is something you should take note of when purchasing.
  • Because the making of these can be a little sketchy if the manufacturers are not trusted, generally rebonded foam mattresses are bought on the basis of Certipur-US verification. This certification is rare to come by in mattress showrooms of our country. If you do find one, buy it. Otherwise, you’d best order it online. The problem with buying online is that many services do not offer a trial period, so it is best to pre-emptively look for returning and shipping policies.

#6. Airbed Mattresses

These beds are created with a very specific context in mind. You can use airbed mattresses as a normal mattress, but then you would not be using it for its intended purpose. Airbed mattresses are inflatable. Consider a balloon. Now think a mattress, but with a balloon’s design principle. What you have is basically the airbed mattress in essence. These are very portable, and you can carry them even in small pouches once they are deflated.

For this portability, you can get the best use out of them when you use them as camping beds.

For its composition, it often does not include a comfort layer at all. Instead, they consist solely of a support core. The support core has at least two air chambers, which allows for their inflation or deflation to tweak how firm the support is. They commonly make use of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride).

There is quite a wide range of airbed mattresses that differ in three major aspects. These are:

  • When you try out an airbed, you may notice a pronounced trench in the middle of the bed. The width of these trenches varies from one manufacturer’s model to the other. As they cause general discomfort, it is best to try and find a mattress that has smaller trenches or no trenches at all.
  • Some airbed mattresses come with remote-controlled functions, while others are manual. The remote-controlled variants cost more as expected, but they are a great quality-of-life thing to have.
  • Every airbed mattress allows you some degree of control over how firm the support core will be, but some mattresses have the scope for a wider range of options compared to others, so this is one factor to take note of. Generally, these are used for camping purposes, so more customizability is always welcome to adapt to more situations.

Pros of Airbed Mattresses

  • Because the crux of its support is air and you can inflate and deflate it, it has infinite durability. However, you have to do some basic maintenance on it to keep it in sound condition when you are not using it.
  • The customizability it offers allows you to tweak it best to your preferred level of firmness. This is a feature unique to the airbed mattress.
  • Another unique aspect to the airbed mattress is its portability. It is much better than carrying a bedroll around, which takes up space and quite a large amount of weight.
  • The PVC frame makes it completely odourless.
  • Airbed mattresses will not absorb heat from your body, so it is great for camping out in tundra climates and cold mountainous regions.

Cons of Airbed Mattresses

  • While these are resistant to sagging, they are open to other vulnerabilities – like punctures and leaks. These are repairable, though.
  • The air inside it gives it a very high noise potential. It is best to buy airbed mattresses for one person apiece, as these are bad at accommodating two persons on the same bedding with its noisiness.
  • The cheaper models are occasionally susceptible to breakdowns. Unlike small punctures, these are quite expensive to repair. So it is best to pick a mattress with a comprehensive product warranty.
  • Moderately high price range and low availability in local manufacturer stores limit you to purchasing it online.

#7. Waterbed Mattresses

To us Indians, waterbeds are like urban legends. The idea of water used as a material for beddings is something which we think of as a modern novelty and cannot stop awing at. So we went ahead and did a fact-check for you, and it appears that the first prototype of a waterbed appeared way back in the early 1800s.

Wisecracks and information bullets aside, the waterbed mattress has a simpler composition than you’d think. The upholstery in these mattresses is usually standard, making use of fibres and polyurethane foam. In the support core, there is instead a padded chamber filled with water. The various type of waterbed mattresses differ largely in the way water is handled in this padded chamber.

  • A free flow or full wave mattress has no baffles or inserts in the chamber, i.e. no mechanism to regulate the flow of water in it.
  • A waveless mattress is a more expensive variant which makes use of many baffles and inserts to restrict water motion. Additionally, they also incorporate additional layers within it, known as the lumbar support.
  • A sem-waveless mattress is a compromise between the two, regulating water movement to an extent and increasing support with a lesser number of baffles and inserts.

Pros of Waterbed Mattresses

  • Waterbed mattresses are one of the best class of mattresses when it comes to providing comfort. It has excellent body contouring, close to zero pressure point creation with zero resistance, and also allow space for relaxing the spine and back muscles. Definitely prioritize buying a waterbed mattress if you tend to conventionally sleep on your back.
  • The waterbed mattress provides temperature regulation through its unique and most effective way: by directly altering the support core temperature. If you live in cold regions, many waterbeds actually come with in-built heating system, which can give you warmth and muscle relaxation. In the warmer tropic climates, you can refill the core with cold water for a soothing sleep as well.
  • On most waterbed mattresses, only vinyl is used in the places where fabric usage is common, so it is naturally resistant to dust accumulation. It is also very easy to clean, so you are practically free of dust mites and other allergens as long as you clean it semi-regularly.

Cons of Waterbed Mattresses

  • While there is no scope for pressure points, a lack of good support is felt especially in free-flowing water mattresses. As a result of having little to no support for your joints, you will experience back numbness if you sleep on a waterbed mattress for too long.
  • The vinyl coating and sturdy padded chamber ensure a certain degree of durability, but nevertheless a waterbed mattress is susceptible to fatigue cracks. While pinhole punctures can be repaired without much hassle, some bigger leaks can cause serious damage. So make sure you double-check the durability clauses with the manufacturer before you purchase a waterbed.

#8. Latex Mattresses

Boston Natural Latex Mattress

These are much like memory foam mattresses in many aspects, except they make obligatory use of latex on the comfort layer – which is mostly natural (processed from rubber tree sap), but can be synthetic as well.. The support layer usually features high-density polyfoam, but it can also include latex as well.

They generally offer good temperature regulation and are very comfortable.

The quality of experience a latex mattress can offer depends on various factors, such as:

  • Latex is processed in two major methods – the Dunlop method and the Talalay method. Dunlop processing is bottom-heavy because it causes sediment in the bottom while providing a more lenient top, and because of these, the latex from Dunlop processing is best utilized in the support layer.
  • The Talalay processing, on the contrary, produces a more even mixture of tender and frothy foam, and you can find it in the comfort layer in most cases. However, this is the ideal case scenario you should look out for, and the latex mattresses in reality make use of both or any one kind of latex on any layer.
  • There is a parameter to put the firmness of latex mattresses on a scale from 16 to 39+. This is called the ILD (Indentation Load Deflection). An ILD score of 16 means the softest latex possible by market standards, while 39 (or more) can be considered firm.

Pros of Latex Mattresses

  • Because it contains rubber grid, plus polyfoam usage in most cases, the latex mattresses have a natural bounciness. In fact, it is more enjoyable than the innerspring mattresses in that regard.
  • The polyfoam and Talalay latex are usually hypoallergenic. On the one hand, this makes it completely free of dust mites and such allergens to give you a good night’s sleep. On the other hand, this also makes it resistant to all kinds of dust, mildews, and moulds. No dust or mould means a much longer lifespan and less maintenance hassle.
  • In case of natural latex mattresses (i.e. no synthetic latex), they make for a great eco-friendly and all around better alternative to memory foam mattresses.
  • Latex mattresses provide excellent flexibility and contour adaptability. There are absolutely no pressure points, and latex mattresses even remove the no-support penalty of memory foam mattresses to make it the perfect recovery bed for lower-back aches.
  • It is great for both side-sleepers and stomach-sleepers. Heavyweight sleepers also benefit immensely from it owing to its often dense nature.

Cons of Latex Mattresses

  • As a large caveat, the Latex Mattresses are the most expensive kind of mattress available on the market – not only in India but globally. So if you want a cheaper alternative, you might have to settle for the foam mattresses.
  • It comes with a high off-gassing potential, as the rubber material emits volatile organic compounds during the manufacturing process.
  • They have poor edge support.
  • They offer little to no portability, being very heavy in all sizes.

#9. Adjustable Base Mattresses

These are a very situational type of mattress, but nevertheless very useful. Adjustable mattresses come with, as the name suggests, adjustable bases, which you can use according to your needs. Remember when we said situational? This structural flexibility makes it a great remedy for patients of sleep disorders or spinal injuries that do not allow them to sleep in conventional postures. But on top of that, it also helps in various common day-to-day issues – for example, when you have acid reflux, indigestion, and heartburn. Plus you can also adapt it to your lifestyle. If you are a couch potato who really likes watching TV for hours on end, you can personalize a flexible bed and adjustable base mattress to have you sit semi-upright while still being laid back.

The large caveat in case of adjustable bed mattresses is its availability in India. Very few independent showrooms and mattress outlets stock up on them if any. Your only option is online shopping, and again, they are often out of stock on the online stores too.

Mattress Sizes

Mattresses come in different sizes to fit different accommodation needs. It is best to familiarize yourself to the related terms. In India, this classification varies greatly from that in the US, so this something you should remember if you go the extra mile to import mattress built by foreign manufacturers.

  • Single sized mattresses – These are built for single one-person cots, i.e. they cover sufficient space for the average adult. The average area is 75 inches x 32 inches.
  • Double sized mattress – Contrary to what it may lead you to think, these are not double the area of a single-size mattress. These come in an area of 72 inches x 48 inches to 72 inches x 60 inches and can accommodate either one adult with a large frame, or two average adults.
  • Queen sized mattress – Clocking in at an area that ranges from 72 x 60 to 78 x 60 square inches, the queen-sized mattress are the larger variant of double-sized mattresses and can accommodate two large adults.
  • King sized mattress – These have an area of a square 72 x 72 to a longer 78 x 72 square inches. The king-sized mattress is as large as market-standard mattresses get, and it is ideal for a couple with a child.

If you have read till this point, you have our hearty congratulations, because you now know enough about mattresses to identify which kind of mattress will fit your preferences, and which will not.

But for your convenience’s sake, we will list the top 19 mattresses of all kinds that are most popular on the Indian market right now, and then pick out the best mattresses for the different context.

As we noted earlier, there can be no one-key-fits-all mattress for every possible scenario. So to elect a forerunner, we are doing it in four different categories with different contexts.

  • For Pregnancy: For most pregnant women, it is advisable to sleep on their left side, so our prime criteria are side-sleeper compatibility, motion isolation, and a moderate level of body contouring to avoid spinal misalignment. Foam mattresses are the clear winner here, and in our experience, the best mattress available in India for this is SleepyCat Plus 8-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress
  • For Back pain: For this, the best mattress solution is a mattress that provides an orthopedically correct balance between firmness and body contouring, and rebonded foam mattresses are especially good in this regard. To our experience, Euro Dreams Eurofit Bonded Foam Mattress has proven to have the best therapeutic qualities.
  • For Couples: The biggest caveat when it comes to couples is problems with motion transfer and noise as one of the two partners readjust their sleeping posture, tossing and turning on the bed. This is remedied by good motion isolation and noise masking. And Flo Ergo 6-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress has indubitably the best motion isolation out of all the mattresses.
  • For kids: Children need a good amount of comfort to lull them to sleep, to have no pressure points, as well as good joint support to avoid numbness, as they are in a supine or prone position almost all day. For this, we select Sleepycat 6-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress, the all-around best mattress for children.
